OB-GYN Student Interest Group
The OB-GYN Student Interest Group at the UMMC School of Medicine is structured to foster an interest in the field of OB-GYN and to facilitate a better understanding of the practice and subspecialties.
We are able to accomplish these things through monthly speakers from the department, shadowing opportunities and exposure to both clinical and research experiences. Our annual Simulation Night allows for the students and department to come together and cover a variety of skill sets, including knot tying, suturing, pelvic exams,
breast exams, birthing simulation and much more. The OB-GYN Interest Group strives to meet the interests and needs of all medical students at UMMC who are interested in a career in this field.
The objectives of the Interest Group are as follows:
- To introduce OB-GYN as a career option to students early on in their medical education
- For students to gain a better understanding of what a career in the field of OB-GYN entails and to expose them to the diversity of fellowships available thereafter:
- Maternal-fetal medicine
- Reproductive endocrinology and infertility
- Gynecologic oncology
- Urogynecology
- To portray an accurate representation of the lifestyle of a clinician in this field
- To provide students with a faculty perspective of the requirements and expectations in order to receive admission into an OB-GYN Residency Program, as well as providing the tools and experiences to equip them for such
- Introduce the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UMMC to the students and to highlight the strengths of our residency program
- To provide training opportunities for hands-on clinical skills unique to this specialty
- To facilitate professional contacts and create preceptor relationships for guidance and insight as students pursue this career path
